TRV vs Manual Radiator Valves: Which Should You Choose?

A TRV radiator valve reacts to the temperature around it and adjusts the flow through the radiator automatically. A manual radiator valve stays where you set it until you turn it again. For most buyers, the choice is simply between automatic room-temperature control and straightforward manual adjustment.

What a TRV Actually Does

A TRV senses the air temperature around its thermostatic head. As the room warms towards the selected setting, the valve reduces the flow of hot water through that radiator. When the room cools, it can open again and allow more flow.

The numbered setting is a temperature setting, not a power setting. Turning a TRV higher does not make the radiator heat the room faster; it simply tells the valve to allow the room to reach a higher temperature before restricting the flow.

What a Manual Valve Does

A manual radiator valve does not sense the room temperature. You open or close it to change the flow through the radiator, and it stays at that position until someone adjusts it again.

That can be exactly what you want on a straightforward setup. There is less to think about, but there is also no automatic response if the room gets warmer from sunlight, people or other heat sources.

Which One Makes More Sense in a Bathroom?

Choose a TRV when…

you want the bathroom radiator or towel rail to back off automatically once the room reaches a comfortable temperature. It can be useful where the room temperature changes noticeably through the day.

Choose manual when…

you prefer direct control and usually leave the towel rail at one setting, or you only want to turn it up and down occasionally rather than have the valve react automatically.

Check the heating setup when…

the towel rail is in the same room as the main thermostat, the system needs a particular radiator left unrestricted, or you are changing the way the heating system is controlled rather than simply replacing existing valves.

Watch Where a TRV Head Sits

A thermostatic head needs to sense the room air around it. If it is tucked into a tight recess, boxed in or regularly covered by a towel, it can read the warmer air around the valve rather than the room as a whole. On a heated towel rail, leave the head exposed and follow the valve manufacturer’s positioning guidance.

TRV or Manual Does Not Tell You the Valve Shape

This is where radiator-valve shopping gets confusing. TRV and manual describe the control. Angled, straight and corner describe the way the valve body connects the pipework to the radiator or towel rail. You can therefore have, for example, an angled TRV or an angled manual valve.

Angled valves

Angled radiator valves turn the connection through the valve body and suit layouts where the pipework and radiator connection meet at an angle.

Straight valves

Straight radiator valves keep the pipe and radiator connection in line. They are commonly used where the pipework approaches in the same direction as the connection on the radiator.

Corner valves

Corner radiator valves can give a tighter wall-side connection in suitable installations and are often chosen when keeping the valve body visually neat matters.

Do You Need a Valve on Both Sides?

A wet central-heating radiator normally has a valve connection at both ends. One side gives you the user control — TRV or manual — while the other side is commonly fitted with a lockshield valve used when the system is balanced.

Some products are sold as matching pairs and others as individual valves. Check what is included before comparing prices, especially if you want both sides to match in finish.

Match the Finish to the Rail

Once the valve type and shape are sorted, the finish is the easy part. A matching valve usually gives the neatest result, particularly on exposed pipework where the fittings are clearly visible.

Does a TRV need electricity? A conventional mechanical TRV does not normally need mains electricity. Smart or electronic radiator controls are different and may use batteries or powered components.
Can you fit a TRV to a heated towel rail? Many centrally heated towel rails can use a TRV when the valve is compatible with the rail and heating system. The thermostatic head should also be positioned where it can sense the room air properly.
