TAILS’ CONTROL CHECK
Balance precise control with flexible shower design
Mixer showers blend the bathroom’s supplied hot and cold water to produce the selected shower temperature. With exposed and concealed controls, manual and thermostatic options, and models intended for different outlet arrangements, the range provides considerable design choice when your plumbing system can supply suitable hot and cold flow.
Which Mixer Showers Suit Your Water System?
Compare water supplies, control formats and shower outlet arrangements
Hot and cold supplies are available
A shower mixer control uses water from both supplies rather than heating cold water internally. The available flow and pressure must suit the selected valve and shower outlet, so confirm compatibility with the property’s plumbing system before purchasing.
You want installation format choice
An exposed mixer shower keeps the valve and connections visible for a straightforward appearance, while a concealed mixer shower hides most working components behind the wall. The better option depends on wall depth, access and the intended bathroom design.
You value adjustable mixed temperature
Manual designs let the user balance hot and cold flow, while thermostatic mixer shower models are designed to regulate the mixed temperature. Controls, safety features and operating methods vary, so compare the individual specification rather than the appearance alone.
Your hot supply is suitable
A mixer shower cannot provide heated water when no suitable hot supply reaches the bathroom. An electric shower may be more appropriate where heating cold mains water independently is required, subject to the necessary electrical and plumbing installation.
The wall suits concealed fitting
Concealed valves require adequate space for the body, connections and pipework behind the finished surface. Where the wall cannot provide the manufacturer’s stated installation depth, an exposed mixer arrangement may avoid extensive building work while retaining mixed-water control.
The valve matches every outlet
Single-outlet and multi-outlet mixer valves do not provide the same functions. Establish whether the shower will use a fixed head, handset or both, then confirm how the selected valve controls them and whether simultaneous operation is supported.
Mixer Shower FAQs
Water heating, temperature control and replacement installations explained
-
Do mixer showers heat cold water?
No. A mixer shower blends hot water already supplied by the property’s water-heating system with a cold supply. It does not heat cold water internally in the way an electric shower does.
-
What is the difference between manual and thermostatic mixers?
A manual mixer relies on the user adjusting the hot and cold flow to reach the desired temperature. A thermostatic model is designed to regulate the mixed temperature, although its controls and protective features depend on the individual product.
-
Can a mixer shower replace an electric shower?
Yes, but it is not normally a direct replacement. The installation requires suitable hot and cold water supplies, compatible pipework and appropriate wall preparation. The existing electrical connection must also be dealt with safely by a qualified professional.
DESIGNER’S NOTE
Position the controls where they can be reached before entering the water flow, then align the valve, shower head and handset along a clear visual line.
