TAILS’ HEATING CONNECTION CHECK
Control and complete your radiator connections
Radiator valves regulate or isolate the flow of water through compatible radiators and heated towel rails while forming the visible connection to the pipework. Compare valve orientation, control type, connection size and finish to find a suitable pair for your heating layout and bathroom design.
Which Radiator Valves Suit Your Heating Installation?
Match the valve direction, control format and connections to your radiator and pipework
You need to connect a radiator or towel rail
A suitable valve pair connects the heating appliance to the flow and return pipework while allowing water movement to be controlled. Check the radiator inlets, pipe diameter and required connection type before choosing the visible valve design.
Your pipe direction determines the valve shape
Radiator valves are available in different configurations to suit how the pipes approach the radiator inlets. Selecting the correct orientation creates a more direct connection and avoids forcing awkward pipe bends beside the radiator or heated towel rail.
You want the controls to suit everyday use
Manual valves provide direct adjustment, while thermostatic radiator valves can regulate flow in response to the surrounding room temperature. The appropriate option depends on the heating system, radiator position and level of individual room control required.
Its orientation conflicts with the pipework
A valve designed for a different pipe approach can project awkwardly or prevent a neat connection. Confirm whether the pipework rises from the floor, exits the wall or aligns directly with the radiator before purchasing.
The thread or pipe connection does not match
Valve bodies, radiator tails and pipe connections are available in different sizes and formats. A visually suitable set may still be incompatible, so compare the complete technical specification rather than relying on appearance or finish.
The control cannot operate with enough clearance
Large thermostatic heads and projecting handles need room to turn without meeting walls, furniture or nearby sanitaryware. A more compact or differently angled valve may be required where the radiator sits in a restricted position.
Radiator Valve FAQs
Valve pairs, thermostatic control and connection compatibility explained
-
Do radiators need two valves?
Most central-heating radiators use one valve at each connection. One controls or isolates the incoming flow, while the other commonly acts as a lockshield used to balance and isolate the radiator within the heating system.
-
What is the difference between manual and thermostatic radiator valves?
A manual valve remains at the position selected by the user until adjusted again. A thermostatic radiator valve senses the surrounding air temperature and changes the water flow to help maintain the chosen room setting.
-
Are radiator valves supplied in pairs?
Some products include a complete pair, while others contain one individual valve or a thermostatic valve with a separate lockshield. Check the stated contents so both radiator connections are covered where required.
-
Will any radiator valve fit any radiator?
No. The radiator connection, pipe size, valve orientation and heating arrangement must all be compatible. Check the specifications for both the radiator and valve before ordering, particularly when replacing an existing set.
DESIGNER’S NOTE
Treat the valves as part of the radiator rather than an afterthought, coordinating their finish with the heating appliance or nearby brassware while keeping the pipe route as neat and direct as possible.
