Bathroom Furniture Buying Guide
Compare furniture styles, installation options and product compatibility before making your choice
Vanity and basin units
Vanity and basin units combine useful storage with a bathroom basin. They are available in compact, full-width, wall-hung and floor-standing designs, making them suitable for everything from cloakrooms to larger family bathrooms.
WC and combination units
WC units conceal the cistern and surrounding pipework for a cleaner finish. Combination furniture can bring a basin, toilet and storage together in one coordinated layout, which can be useful when planning a complete bathroom.
Tall and fitted furniture
Tall units make use of vertical space and provide additional storage without taking up a wide section of the room. Fitted furniture creates a more integrated appearance and can provide continuous storage across a larger wall.
Wall-hung or floor-standing?
Wall-hung furniture keeps the floor visible and can make the bathroom easier to clean, but it requires a suitable supporting wall and secure fixings. Floor-standing furniture is supported from below and may offer more internal storage, although skirting boards can affect how closely it sits against the wall.
Check the plumbing configuration
Review the position of the water supplies, waste pipe and any concealed plumbing before choosing a unit. Check whether drawers or internal shelves include space for pipework and whether rear-entry connections are suitable for your bathroom layout.
Check basin and fitting compatibility
Confirm whether the furniture is designed for an inset, countertop or integrated basin. Check the number and position of any tap holes and make sure your chosen tap, waste and basin arrangement are compatible with the unit.
Bathroom Furniture FAQs
Helpful information about installation, care and everyday use
-
Is bathroom furniture waterproof?
Bathroom furniture is normally designed to cope with humid conditions, but it should not be treated as fully waterproof. Wipe away standing water and splashes promptly, keep the room well ventilated and avoid placing furniture where it will be exposed to direct, repeated contact with water.
-
Is bathroom furniture supplied assembled?
This varies between products. Some bathroom furniture arrives fully assembled, while other units require partial or complete assembly before installation. Check the individual product information so you know what preparation will be required.
-
Can bathroom furniture be fitted over skirting boards?
It depends on the furniture design and the depth of the skirting board. Some floor-standing units may need the skirting to be removed or carefully altered so the unit can sit correctly against the wall. Wall-hung furniture can often be positioned above the skirting instead.
-
How should bathroom furniture be cleaned?
Use a soft, damp cloth and a mild cleaning product that is suitable for the furniture finish. Avoid abrasive pads, harsh chemicals and excessive water. Dry the surfaces afterwards and follow any care instructions supplied with the product.
